Every year 40,000 people or more gather in the town to throw over 115,000 kilograms of tomatoes at each other in the yearly Tomatina festival. WebThe festival carries on a tradition that started in 1945 and has now become a staple of Spanish tradition in Valencia. La Tomatina is also the world’s largest state-sanctioned food fight. While some years have seen as many as 50,000 participants, Buñol’s La Tomatina festival averages around 40,000 attendees each year.
