WebDr. Walter Blaxland, a member of one of the oldest Australian pioneering families, and a grandson of Gregory Blaxland, who, with Wentworth and Lawson, blazed a track over the Blue Mountains, died yesterday. He was aged 88 years. In 1916 he volunteered as an honorary medical officer at Randwick Military Hospital, where he remained until 1920. Blaxland, Wentworth and Lawson led an expedition party, which included four servants, four pack horses and five dogs. Two of the four men who assisted the party have been identified as James Burne (or Burnes), a guide and kangaroo hunter, and Samuel Fairs, a convict who arrived in Australia in 1810.
